10 amazing images of volcanic eruptions clicked by NASA

Chances are you've seen a lot of news about erupting volcanoes, right? In this article, we'll show you 10 amazing images taken by NASA, but not so widely reported in the press, that record the moment of a volcano eruption.

What is a volcano?
The volcano is considered a geological structure when there is a rupture in the planet's crust, through which magma, gases and hot particles are expelled to the surface.

The following photos, gathered by Agora Viagem staff, were captured by satellites and crew members aboard the International Space Station and on space missions and show a view of space from one of nature's most terrifying events. Check it out below:

1. Sarychev volcano in Russia

The image above shows the view of astronauts from the Sarychev Volcano International Space Station erupting on June 12, 2009. The last eruption of the Sarychev before this date was in 1989.

2. Manam Volcano in Papua New Guinea

A NASA satellite recorded this image on June 16, 2010. This is the Manam Volcano in Papua New Guinea, releasing a thin, light gray blue volcanic plume. The white part is clouds that resulted from the water vapor of the volcano.

3. Kliuchevskoi volcano in Russia

The Kliuchevskoi Volcano also provided a spectacular image. The photo was recorded on October 11, 1994, by NASA astronauts.

4. Pavlof Volcano, Alaska

Pavlof Volcano, located in Alaska

Pavlof Volcano was photographed by astronauts erupting aboard the International Space Station on May 18, 2013. The three-dimensional structure of the ash plumes is most striking in the image above.

5. Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland

The ash spewed from Shinmoedake Volcano has been the main danger since it erupted on January 26, 2011. The gray plume expands for miles over Miyazaki City.

The image you just saw above is of the erupting Nyiragongo Volcano, recorded by the Ikonos satellite, which shows the plume being expelled by it and also its crater.

Russia's Kliuchevskoi Volcano, as you may have noticed, was entitled to two images on this list, thanks to the grandeur and beauty of its eruptions seen from space. This photograph above was taken by the crew of the Endeavor space shuttle on September 30, 1994, when the volcano was near its eruption peak.
