5 gadgets that promised to make people more beautiful

Today, we have countless procedures and options to correct some defects and make our appearance more harmonious. However, in the past people did not have access to so many facilities, using superb gadgets to get rid of the imperfections that bothered them.

The folks at mental_floss have put together a bunch of these crazy inventions, and we've selected some of the most interesting for you. Check out:

Nose Straightener

More like a horse bridle than an aesthetic product, the above device, introduced in the 1920s, promised to correct the profiles without having to resort to painful surgical procedures. According to inventor M. Trilety, just using Trados Nose-Shaper - preferably well hidden at home - for quick, permanent and painless correction.

Dimples Machine

Many people believe that having dimples - those little marks that appear on some people's cheeks when they smile - is quite appealing, and Isabella Gilbert, the woman who invented the imaging device, probably spent most of her life thinking about a way to get yours. Isabella's creation consisted of a spring with two bends that served to press the face and create the dimples.

Electrified mask

Launched in 1933 by Dr. Joseph Brueck, the electrified mask featured a small battery and some coils that produced heat to melt fine lines and wrinkles. But if you feel claustrophobic just looking at the invention, don't worry. The mask had small eye holes and a tube through which to breathe.

Anti-bald helmet

If you think only women were vain in the past - nowadays everyone knows that vanity is not exclusively female! See the above invention, launched in 1900. Thermocap promised to stimulate dormant hair follicles and prevent hair loss through the application of heat and the effect of blue light bulbs.

Beauty micrometer

Perhaps one of the craziest gadgets on the list is the beauty micrometer invented by Maksymilian Faktorowicz - the same creator of the well-known Max Factor cosmetics line - in 1932. The device was used to detect the imperfections present on the face, which were corrected by use. Makeup Less drastic than surgery, but equally scary to look at!
