6 Tips for a Career Turnaround

Changing careers is an arduous challenge for many professionals who are already established in their fields. Fearlessness, tied to fear, ends up preventing many people from following the path they want, and causes many dreams to be abandoned. Management and leadership consultant Renato Grinberg turned his career around at age 25 and lists some tips for those who need a little push to make this decision:

1. Make yourself aware

At 25 I had a dream and a goal, one different from the other. You need to know what you want and where you want to go. When I went to change careers I said, "I'm going to abandon this dream and turn my goal of doing something big into reality." Therefore, it is important to have this moment of reflection and self-knowledge, to understand what are the dreams and goals, and what the professional wants to prioritize.

2. The dream has no barriers, no restrictions or planning.

But it is important to remember that dreams and goals are very different things. If you want to go after your goal, you will often have to abandon the dream and be mature to make your goal tangible. It is important to understand this risk and understand how willing you are to face it.

3. How do you know it's time for a change?

On the physical plane, pain shows us that something is wrong. In the psychological field, dissatisfaction is this pain. If everything you are doing does not lead you to your goals, then it is time for a change. But you must have a target. There are people who only change companies, but it is not evolving. Without a goal, anything goes.

4. Don't be afraid of failing!

Often what seems like a failure is just an opportunity in disguise. Many Brazilians suffer from "no pay" syndrome, where any idea and encouragement end up dying because you believe that effort, dedication or risk is not worth it. And with that they lose good chances of reinserting themselves in the market. For this reason, the tip here is clear: don't be afraid to fail and try something new! By engaging in this change, the opportunity for growth and job satisfaction may be closer than you think.

5. Be aware that you may need to take steps back.

If you are changing careers, it is normal that you need to prove something before you move up. When you play a complex piece of music, you start with small pieces. If you give up, you'll never see it turn into music. Therefore, taking a step back can and probably will be a necessary attitude for the professional to achieve this new goal more strongly.

6. Don't be wondering if the plans will work out

You do not control what happens to you or how you feel about what is happening in the environment around you and within you. Here it is worth remembering the concept of "sunk cost". If you've invested a million in a business, you can't think how much you've already invested if the project isn't working. The last tip is harder to execute, but it's important at this time of transition: don't be wondering if the plans will work out. Here, the ideal is to invest right now and strive for them to happen. Going right or wrong will be a consequence that you cannot control, but it will surely be of paramount importance to your growth.
