7 of the unacceptable punishments that have already been used with slaves

These terrible practices were used during the dark period of slavery in the United States - and in different parts of the world - and will be forever etched in history. In addition to being forced to work in unusual conditions, slaves were daily punished in a barbaric and cruel manner. Check out some of the common techniques at the time:

1. Separation of families

The concept of family was completely ignored at the time: babies were seen as yet another way to make money and were thus torn from their parents' arms to be sold.

2. Neck Chains

As you may have already seen from records, it was common to wear large, heavy iron chains that held slaves around their necks to prevent escape. This method was mainly used during transport between regions and caused pain, discomfort and suffocation.

3. Dog Pursuit

Running away has always been a tremendous challenge for all slaves. In addition to dealing with various shackles and the watchful eyes of the overseers, they also ran the risk of being caught and torn apart by the various dogs who ran the properties.

4. Identification mark

This painful method was not only used as punishment, but also to identify the "properties" of each master. With hot iron, for example, they marked different parts of the slave's body, such as the palm, buttocks and abdomen.

5. Iron Masks

Some slaves were required to wear an iron mask for days, causing extreme discomfort and even panic and anxiety attacks. They could leave burns and large scars.

6. Salt-rubbed wounds

After being whipped, some slaves were further punished: their wounds were rubbed with salt, lemon juice, or any other substance that caused extreme pain and ensured that the scars were accentuated.

7. Mutilation

Like other punishments, mutilation was used to terrorize slaves who thought of breaking orders. This punishment included amputations, genital mutilation, among others.
