7 science-proven reasons for you to loosen your tongue and swear a lot

Sometimes there is no way: the head boils and the calm that we need to keep in conflict situations ends up leaving us in hand. And we explode. A study published in the journal NeuroReport showed the reaction of tests done with a group of students who put their hands in a container of cold water. It sounds like Chinese torture, but the idea was to see how long they could stay that way.

Those who said bad words had less pain and were able to get an average of 40 seconds longer with their hands in the water than the volunteers who were forced to keep silent.

When you swear at someone or some situation, your body prepares to get into a fight. This defense mechanism, as you may have realized in practice, makes your heart beat fast. Of course, this is a positive thing when stress is not too great - in extreme situations it can get out of control.

It is true that we are not always saying profanity to people with whom we have some good level of affective relationship, but scientists have realized one unusual thing: swearing can improve interpersonal relationships.

“In addition to the psychological function of cursing, we cannot forget social functions. Cursing is important for building close relationships, friendship or intimacy with others, ”said researcher Monika Bednarek of the University of Sydney.

According to psychiatrist Neel Burton, when we scream and curse, we show ourselves that we are not passive creatures and victims, but people who can respond with empowerment and fight if necessary. This is indeed important and can improve your self confidence and also your self esteem.
