Human obsession with the butt reaches its peak, and science explains

Buttocks have never been more in evidence than today. In popular culture, they are valued and acclaimed and have even won an exclusive “selfie stick”, the “belfie stick”. But from a scientific and evolutionary point of view, what is and what is this big chunk of fat behind our pelvis for? And why does he get us so much attention?

The University of New South Wales, Australia, decided to explore the theme through its "How We Get Here" program and found that it can tell us a lot about our evolutionary past. According to what they concluded, our pelvis has a unique shape. which distinguishes humans from our primate ancestors.

Walking and having children

According to evolutionary biologist Darren Curnoe, it is thanks to our wide and full pelvis that we can walk stably on any terrain. The hips have also expanded over the years, as have our brains and skulls to allow our female ancestors to give birth.

This is the main reason for the considerable difference between the body forms of men and women. The female body needs larger hips to be able to expel the child. But besides that, they have much more fat in the buttocks, hips and thighs than men. What explains?

Sexual selection

According to Curnoe, the fact that justifies this is the larger size of the female hips. But another theory points to a more, say, spicy way: women's bulge would be a sexually selected trait.

Sexual selection is a powerful evolutionary force throughout the animal kingdom. Following this logic, men and women prefer characteristics linked to fertility or the ability to paternity and motherhood. Thus, people seek to mate with individuals who possess these traits over others.

Unrelated

However, the butt has no benefit when it comes to fertility. In humans, the themes are not linked, as in chimpanzees - a back signal indicates that the female is in heat, that is, ready to mate.

In our species, the heat process is hidden and happens internally, which sets us apart from most mammals. One explanation for butt attraction is that many men associate a big butt with fertility.

Another reason for the large size of the female butt would be related to the size of the human penis and our desire to have sex at any time of the month. The theme still seems a little hazy. That's why we ask you: what do you think about the subject?
