Teenager has amputated leg due to ingrown toenail

Everything was normal in British Hannah Moore's life until she had two ingrown toenails. What seemed like a routine problem turned into a big nightmare. In 2012, after months of discomfort, she underwent minor surgery to unclench her nails and be happy again. But it wasn't quite like that ...

Currently 19, she has spent the last 4 years in a particular hell: unbearable pain in her right leg, the result of a rare complex regional pain syndrome. Although there was no sign of infection after surgery, any touching of her leg caused horrible pain. The recovery of the left leg was complete after the nail was unlocked.

The disease eventually evolved, and Hannah's foot began to turn black and with a strange scale. Gradually, a bacterium began to eat the flesh of its foot and there was not much solution; That's why Hannah decided to amputate her entire leg and get rid of her suffering. She spent 5, 000 pounds on this surgery - about 20, 000 reais - even at the risk that the pain would continue on the remaining part of her leg.

Amputation Could Not Solve the Problem

"The last three years have been an absolute nightmare. It's amazing how much my life has changed just because of an ingrown toenail. And I couldn't be happier than now that I had my leg amputated. And I wasn't afraid : I was very excited, ”explained the teenager.

The surgery took place in July this year, and now Hannah is starting to think about the future. Before the amputation, she was in love with sports. Now you will need to adapt to your new condition to practice again. And she reveals that this does not discourage her. “Even a blanket over my leg could bring me to tears, ” he recalls.

Nowadays she is in no pain and recovering from the amputation. The greatest risk was that the pain would continue because it is a syndrome that originates even from minor surgery. Despite the risks, Hannah was willing to try. “I'm finally catching up and getting my life on track, ” he celebrates.

Paralympic athlete

Before the amputation, the teenager practiced karate. Now she is adapting to the new life. For months he used a wheelchair and has been testing prosthetic legs. However, she is already training for competitions such as wheelchair racing and hand cycling.

“I hope to be able to represent Britain in the 2020 Paralympic Games triathlon, ” he says. “Now the sky is the limit and I can't wait to make my dreams come true, ” he adds. According to the accompanying doctors, her program is very promising.

According to Amanda Nelson, a specialist in Hannah's disease, complex regional pain syndrome is a rare disease that involves both the neurological and vascular, immune and nervous systems. “It is a debilitating and disabling inflammatory condition that can be caused by minor injury, broken or fractured bones, surgery or also spontaneously appearing with no known cause, ” explains Amanda.
