Distress and amazement: see the larynx of a working beatboxer

For those who don't know, beatboxers are those musicians who can simulate musical instrument sounds and reproduce sound effects using their vocal structures. There are a lot of these world famous guys, and one of them is the talented Australian Tom Thum - of whom we at Mega Curious have already talked about here (you can check out this article via this link).

Well, according to Bec Crew of Science Alert, Thum decided to go to an expert to see his "working tool" working. To do this, the doctor - Matthew Broadhurst of the Queensland Voice Center in Australia - introduced an endoscope through the musician's nose and another down his throat, and of course the beatboxer recorded the full video experience.

As in the first two and a half minutes Thum talks a little bit about your art, we at Mega Curioso have decided to lend you a hand and jump straight to the part where the exam begins. By the way, get ready to feel distress and amazement as you see the beatboxer's vocal chords and other structures in action. Check out:

Wow ...

According to Dr. Broadhurst, a good portion of what we just saw in the video above consists of the upper part of the soft palate, that is, the soft tissue that forms the back of the roof of the mouth. As the laryngologist explained, the sounds produced by Thum are generated by the movements of his tongue - as he compresses it, moves it up and down, “spreads” it in the mouth and makes other contortions with it.

Move and move

Another thing the doctor observed during the exam was Thum's larynx and the way it contracts like crazy when the musician plays certain sounds or being pushed up towards the back of the nose when the beatboxer produces others. In addition, it is possible to see different tissues vibrating - and also producing sound effects.

Swallow that saliva, boy!

There is no doubt that Thum is beyond skillful, but the truth is that although he has learned to use his vocal structures impressively, anatomically speaking, he has nothing unlike any of us. Yes, dear reader, that means most people are the way you saw it in the video inside. It gives a little distress - and even a slight disgust of that mound of saliva -, doesn't it?
