Astronaut films lightning storm from space

This week in the US is being considered “Lightning Awareness and Prevention Week, ” and so US astronaut Reid Wiseman posted on Vine the short video you check out below.

The images were captured when the international space station was on Huston in the US state of Texas.

At the moment, there was a storm in that area and the astronaut decided to capture the images through the station window and publish on Vine. The rays happen almost randomly, but in two specific areas, as you can see.

Although the images were made of the United States, the most lightning-stricken country in the world is Brazil. Annually, about 60 million lightning strikes are recorded in the country and, unfortunately, about 500 people are hit each year. On average 130 of these casualties end up being fatal. There is even a documentary made by journalist Iara Cardoso called Fragments of Passion that portrays events related to the occurrence of lightning in Brazil.
