Brazil has new 'Caveirão do Mar' to fight drug trafficking

The Brazilian Navy now has the Raptor “Mangangá”: a fast-speed armored speedboat that serves to combat drug trafficking, piracy and environmental crime in the Port of Santos region, off the coast of São Paulo. According to the G1, the “caveirão do mar” is already operational and will be used by police, customs and environmental authorities.

The speedboat is nine meters long and reaches over 70 km / h in regions with a minimum depth of 50 centimeters. Black in color and similar in appearance to Rio's Caveirão, Raptor carries five people in the cabin - the armored cabin has arms and hatches. Made by DGS Defense in Rio de Janeiro, the speedboat cost $ 1.5 million.

It has night vision equipment, radars and sensors that allow 24 hour patrolling

According to the Commander of the 8th Naval District, Vice Admiral Claudio Henrique Mello de Almeida, to the G1, “the speedboat acts against cross-border crimes [contraband, sexual exploitation, currency evasion, environmental crimes and drug trafficking, people, weapons and ammunition] in coordination with other bodies. These are border zone specific actions ”.

In addition to São Paulo, the Brazilian Navy also has a Mangangá motorboat in Foz do Iguaçu, which serves to guard the Triple Border (Brazil, Argentina and Paraguais), as well as two in Guanabara Bay, RJ.

About equipment, the grouping commander in Santos, frigate captain Carlos Marden Soares Pereira da Silva, adds: “We are ready to use it in any need. In addition to being able to navigate in shallow water, it has night vision equipment, radars and sensors that allow 24-hour patrolling and in any sea condition, including in the anchorage area [open sea area where ships wait to access the pier] ".
