Scientists warn: In case of nuclear hecatomb, do not use ... conditioner?

Not that keeping the locks well-hydrated and aligned is something that will cross the mind of someone in the midst of a nuclear apocalypse, but ... there goes the warning anyway: anyone who has the misfortune to be near an explosion. Atomic treatment should avoid the use of hair conditioner at all costs. Crazy? Can be! However, strange as it may seem, this is what scientists advise.

Chipped and disheveled

According to Peter Dockrill of Science Alert, as you may know, tensions between the US and North Korea are steadily increasing - especially in recent days, after Koreans have threatened to invade Guam. American in the Pacific - and the most fatalistic do not rule out the possibility of a nuclear attack at some point.

Well! Thinking that the worst could happen, the Guam Department of Civil Defense has issued a kind of guide on what to do if the island is hit by a nuclear missile. And among the instructions, in addition to the usual advice, the material asks the population not to use hair conditioner. Incidentally, the same information is present on the US Government website focused on disaster preparedness.

As if having soft hair was a priority at such a time!

According to Peter, the (non) use of the product is not related to the moment of the atomic explosion itself, but rather to the danger that follows: nuclear ash, that is, the complex combination of radioactive particles that are created during reactions. which remain temporarily suspended in the atmosphere.

So! According to scientists, the conditioner can make these particles stick to the hair - and the product can even make the job of eliminating radioactive material more difficult. As explained, particles can penetrate between the layers that make up the wires, and the conditioners can get them trapped there.

This is because these cosmetics contain polymers and agents called cationic surfactants, which are compounds that function as a kind of gum that causes the cuticles of the hair to stick together. It is these ingredients that make hair softer and shinier - though not always with that whole body and volume we see in advertisements.

And the shampoo?

According to Peter, those who survive a nuclear explosion should abandon the conditioners and adopt a more ... rebellious look, but do not stop washing your hair! The restriction does not apply to shampoos, as most shampoos are designed to assist in cleaning the hair - as if it were a detergent - and are usually completely eliminated after rinsing.

Only shampoo can!

However, it is worth remembering that ointments and body lotions that contain oily substances in their formulation can attract particles that in turn can stick to the skin. Therefore, it is best to discontinue use of these products until the danger of radioactive contamination dissipates.
