Children who play music do better at school, research points

Learning to play a musical instrument can make you get better grades in school, according to a study by the Journal of Educational Psychology. Students with music lessons performed better in subjects such as math, English, and science than their peers.

The research was conducted by British Columbia University (UBC) professor of education Peter Gouzouasis and analyzed more than 112, 000 students. The aim was to analyze whether the belief that music students did not get along so well in other disciplines was true. “Our study showed that this belief is wrong and we found that the more students engage with music, the better they perform on these subjects, ” concluded Gouzouasis.

During the study, they tracked students' performance on English, science, and math tests for a period of time and then compared the grades of those who were in the music curriculum with those who were not.

"Students who learned to play a musical instrument in elementary school and continued to play in high school not only scored significantly higher, but were about one academic year ahead of their non-musical peers in terms of their English skills, math and science as measured by your exam scores, regardless of your socioeconomic background, ethnic background, prior learning in math and English, ”Gougouasis assessed.

The assistant professor at UBC's School of Population and Public Health also referred to the study, stating that students who learn to read music notes, coordinate vision with their hands and mind, and develop auditory skills utilize all of these learning experiences. in areas other than music.
