Personal Testimonial: Jackeline and the Obstacles of Development

That every family has their stories is undeniable. Sadder "causes", happier ones, and more inspiring ones are part of every living person's life. Famous evolutionist Richard Dawkins considers all those who will die lucky - because, after all, they had to be born, and the number of people who will never see the light of day exceeds the number of grains of sand in the Sahara.

What about a person who has a congenital disability problem born in a family without many resources or possibilities of help that, against all expectations of Science and helped by extremely competent professionals - and others not so much -, overcomes difficulties considered insurmountable? Today I will tell the story of the birth and growth of my sister, Jackeline Juliet Franco Zaruvni . She deserves to have her life told.

On September 7, 1988, Beatriz Franco Zaruvni was another routine prenatal visit, even concerned that she had not given birth to her eldest daughter - a few days later than expected and the birthmarks insisted not appear. After a brief examination, it was found that due to a bone injury, there would be no contractions and that the amniotic fluid was at its end, causing serious risks to the baby.

After surgery, the mother could not see the baby. The reason was later discovered: he was born with his left leg facing backwards, in reverse. In addition, the possibility of hydrocephalus was found, which could compromise the child's development.

Having an unpromising diagnosis and knowing that Jackeline, the baby, could always depend on assistance while living, rather than accepting the fact, Beatriz and Reinaldo Zaruvni, our father, waged a race against the odds of medicine. At 3 months, the first of many surgeries would be performed - primarily to correct the leg problem. Consultations with psychologists and physical therapy visits have also become a constant in family life.

In one of the interventions, a problem. Due to a medical error, Jackeline's tendon was damaged, which even affected the natural development of limb growth. Still, the fight continued and another doctor took over, promising to do his best for a rare case of possibility of recovery in such a serious situation.

Then, at about a year and a half, Jackeline's cognitive development “stalled”; she needed someone to look into . That's when I was born. Together we learn to talk, walk and play. Doctors have always been amazed at what all the combined factors could do for a patient, which did not mean, however, that it was an easy process to develop. After all, there is still a lot of prejudice in the world, and we are talking about a girl with physical disabilities, cognitive problems and whose school support, after a time undertaken in the Paraná Association of Rehabilitation - APR, was that of a public school that, even with class for special students, it lacked the structure to handle such cases.

As an adult, she overcame numerous obstacles

After countless surgeries and years of follow-up and therapy, Jackeline, having finished her elementary school studies in a conventional way, works, continues to study, and is one of the hardest people I have ever met. It has a unique inclination to appreciate works of art, preferring colorful ones, and does not dispense with reading a book of poetry or another. Her leg, with its many scars and certainly pains, became functional and, moreover, provided her with a practically normal life - bus riders every day know how difficult it is even with healthy limbs.

From my parents, I have nothing to comment on. They are true heroes who, despite all the problems life has thrown at their heads, have not hesitated in the face of a challenge and raised two children ready to face their own stories, pains and setbacks. Sometimes a little persistence, madness and a desire to win are enough.

Therefore, through the figures of Jackeline, Beatriz and Reinaldo, it is possible to realize that a complicated destiny can be a success and overcoming story. So if there is a problem, do not bow your head: always fight! As my mother says, being honest and determined, one goes the distance. My sister, above all, has gone and promises to go further.

Returning to Richard Dawkins, we are all privileged who were drawn in the birth lottery against all odds. Jackeline is, after all, one more contemplated.
