On May 25, 1996, the 1st National Meeting of Adoption Support Associations and Groups took place in Rio Claro (SP). Since then, this date has appeared on the national calendar as Adoption Day, becoming recognized by law in 2002.
Today in the country, there are almost 9, 000 children in the waiting list at the National Adoption Registry. This number is well below the nearly 40, 000 parents who unfortunately have so many restrictions that the line of children never shrinks. Typically, the most sought after profile is white children under the age of 1, who represent a minimal portion of those who are registered. Campaigns seek to encourage late adoption, the adoption of children with special needs, and the adoption of sibling groups.
