Elon Musk says human base on Mars could be opened in 2028

After announcing SpaceX's plans to take a group of "space tourists" for a walk on the moon, Elon Musk went on to explain that this would be a step to take before bringing humanity to Mars. But when exactly this could happen was not so clear at your recent event. In a Twitter message, however, Musk revealed that SpaceX's goal is to establish a base on the Red Planet around 2028.

This information is in line with what he and SpaceX have disclosed in the past, but it is still an ambitious goal. We have less than 10 years to go, and SpaceX not only needs to develop, manufacture, test and get a reliable rocket to travel with human passengers to Mars, but it must also solve problems supporting a crew there.

SpaceX's original idea is for the crew to spend about a year on Mars collecting ice, which would be turned into water and then hydrogen to fuel their return trip to Earth.

This becomes even more ambitious when NASA, the world's most experienced space agency, still considers whether or not to do so in the 2030s. In other words, Musk's goal may turn out to be very optimistic.

Anyway, this is the "most realistic" timeframe Musk has at the moment. One of his followers asked this question on Twitter and got the answer that gives a deadline for building a base. He also made amusing reference to the renowned science fiction series Battlestar Galactica, whose plot depicts a group of humans wandering in space in search of a planet to build a colony.

Probably 2028 for a base to be built

"Realistically, when this view could turn into a real photograph. 'I need a ray of hope for the future' - (c) Gaius Baltar, former president of the Twelve Colonies."

"Probably 2028 for building a base"

Even so, SpaceX plans to make the first human crew launches a few years before 2028 to evaluate the possibilities of establishing a colony on Mars. Fortunately, the task should not be as dangerous as Galactica's characters, since we don't have the Cylons chasing us wherever we go. (still).
