The beautiful and curious image you have just seen, although it seems to show a camp capable of hosting an entire army of little green men, actually presents a series of dunes on the surface of Mars.

Captured by the HiRISE camera aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft, the image shows a dune field located south of the Martian North Pole, formed by the presence of sand and moderate winds that blow in a predominant direction. indicated by the shape of the mounds.

According to the site dedicated to the HiRISE project, the dunes in the image are approximately 100 meters in diameter and are distributed over hard and rugged terrain. Closer tracking at this location will allow astronomers to determine whether or not the dunes are moving.
