Study shows which Brazilian city has the best 4G connection quality

What is the Brazilian city with the best 4G connection quality? And which one has the fastest data exchange on 4G? OpenSignal, a firm that specializes in wireless coverage mapping around the world, recently published its latest survey of the Tupiniquim framework. Measurements were taken from May 1st to July 29th this year.

If you think the best signal availability score was for Sao Paulo Rio de Janeiro then you are wrong. Belo Horizonte was the only municipality in the whole country to present a percentage higher than 80%. Coincidental or not, the capital of Minas Gerais is one of the information technology hubs and concentrates an important national “Silicon Valley”, with hundreds of startups on the rise and Google's Brazilian headquarters.

Goiânia and Salvador are surprises on the list, with 78% and 77%, respectively. Manaus, Brasilia and Recife scored above 75% and were slightly above São Paulo. The big negative highlight is Rio de Janeiro, which was last among the 14 places with the best index - with 73%.

According to the survey, this does not mean that access to 4G in Rio is bad - not least because the Marvelous City was well above the average of 66.8% in Brazil. Exploring new networks built in the low-frequency spectrum - such as Claro, Tim and Vivo have been taking advantage of in the 700 MHz band - allows better propagation and makes LTE signals travel long distances and penetrate buildings. And this should soon improve the percentage of Rio - which gradually happens in Sao Paulo too.

And in the matter speed?

Well, when we talk about download and upload speed, the list changes dramatically. The city with the fastest 4G connection found in the survey was Porto Alegre, with a rate above 25 Mbps, almost twice as fast as the slowest in Manaus. Brasília was in second place and, unlike the availability ranking, the Northeast region did not do very well here.

Manaus, Belem, Fortaleza, Recife and Salvador were below the national 4G download average of 18.7 Mbps; and the average 4G upload, 6.8 Mbps. Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte even managed to stand out, both with average download speeds of over 19 Mbps, but São Paulo fell short of this mark.
