112 years ago an earthquake destroyed San Francisco - see photos of the tragedy

You may have heard of "The Big One" - the Great Earthquake that is expected to happen one day during the event that is expected to fragment the state of California - right? For if the predictions are confirmed, this earthquake will occur as a result of activity at the San Andreas Fault, which marks the meeting of the North American Plate with the Pacific Plate, and whose movement has already produced several devastating earthquakes near the fault. .

One was the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, which occurred in April 112 years ago, and destroyed about 80 percent of the city. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake began on the 18th shortly after 5 am and lasted only about 28 seconds and was followed by devastating fires - initially caused by the breakdown of natural gas lines and power lines - that took several days to be controlled and extinguished.

At the time, San Francisco had a population and 400, 000 - and the catastrophe left about 225, 000 homeless and more than 3, 000 dead. Today, the city is among the most populous in California, with nearly 885, 000 residents, so imagine the size of the expected disaster if the predictions about The Big One really come true.
