Highlander: Dog Survives 6 Days in Atacama Desert After Flight

Losing your pet is already one of the worst feelings in the world; Now imagine this happening in one of the most hostile places on the planet. Recently, a puppy was lost in the Atacama desert after an accident aboard a plane. It sounds like a nightmare, but fortunately the story ended well.

It all started on June 29, when little Gaspar, a 2-year-old sausage, boarded Ligia Gallardo on a plane in Santiago, Chile, to Iquique in the north of the country - a trip of over 2 a thousand kilometers! Ligia is one of the best friends of Janis Cavieres, the owner of the dog that had traveled by bus a few days earlier and asked her colleague to take her pet.

However, on arriving in Iquique, Ligia discovered that the dog was no longer on the aircraft. How to explain to the friend who lost Gaspar? According to airline officials, it is likely that the dog's crate was dropped and broken during the landing and, frightened, the poor thing fled into the desert as soon as he had an opportunity.

Gaspar spent almost a week lost in one of the driest places on earth

There were 6 days of searching involving Janis aviation officials, army, friends and family and even volunteers who saw the ads on Facebook. He was seen before he was rescued, but as he was afraid he ran away again.

When found, Gaspar was dirty, stressed and malnourished, something expected for those who spent nearly a week in the Atacama Desert - an extremely complicated place to survive even for a human who will say a defenseless puppy ...

The airline has launched an inquiry to ascertain whether the incident was just a fatality or a human error. Gaspar has lost 3 of his 9 kg, but is doing well and is recovering in his new home. What a fright, huh?
