Jim Carrey campaigns against Facebook and leaves social network

Jim Carrey is campaigning against Facebook. The actor went on Twitter to accuse Mark Zuckerberg's social network of profiting from possible Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election in the United States. In addition to closing his page on the platform, the comedian says he will sell his shares of the company at below market price.

“I'm getting rid of my Facebook actions at a bargain price and erasing my page because Facebook has profited from Russian interference in our elections and they are not doing enough to stop it, ” Carrey snapped. “I encourage all other investors who care about our future to do the same, ” he added.

I'm dumping my @facebook stock and deleting my page because @facebook profited from Russian interference in our elections and they're still not doing enough to stop it. I encourage all other investors who care about our future to do the same. #unfriendfacebook pic.twitter.com/KHWgZzhhmp

The actor, famous for films such as “Ace Ventura”, “The Maskara”, “Eternal Brightness of a Mind without a Mind” and “Thruman's Show”, has already been involved in other controversies on social networks. In 2015, for example, he was widely criticized for posting on Twitter associating vaccines with autism. This time, however, as drastic as his opinion may seem, it is somehow grounded in reality.

Facebook itself has recently recognized that social networks can negatively influence democratic processes. For the social network, this interference was slow to be realized - so much so that Mark Zuckerberg himself went publicly denying any responsibility for Facebook at the time when the first accusations about it.

Of course, this is not a Zuckerberg plot to influence elections, because it has more to do with the structure of the social network. Either way, the platform seems to be taking some steps to try to correct this path, such as focusing more on posts from friends and family.
