Young woman disfigured by giant tumor shows facial transplant result

A 26-year-old Polish girl, identified only as Joanna, exhibited the result of her full face transplant at a news conference in the south of the country. She had her face disfigured by a giant tumor caused by a genetic condition called neurofibromatosis.

The problem causes a host of benign tumors, as well as bone problems, spinal pressure, vision and hearing problems, and severe body aches. After surgery, there is no chance for the facial tumor to return, as the newly placed skin does not contain the same mutation.

Joanna's surgery was performed in December 2013. The procedure lasted about 23 hours and changed 80% of the girl's face.
