Largest GIF in the world will not finish running until year 3017

GIFs are successful because they are moving images that are only seconds long, but some people want to break this definition. Finnish artist Juha van Ingen has created a GIF that should last a thousand years !!! That's right: if nothing goes wrong, the GIF will only end in the year 3017.

The image is made up of 48, 140, 288 frames, which alternate every 10 minutes. But if you expect a cute GIF, I am sorry to tell you that it is just a black background with a white number, like a count. According to Ingen, simplicity is purposeful.

“GIF is the simplest form of animation in digital format. If it seems impossible that a simple animation can be kept for so long, then what about all the other information we have? Our images, sounds, movies, files and so on? ”, Analyzes the author.

Museum displays GIF simultaneously on multiple screens

The name of the artwork is “As Long As Possible” or “ASLAP” (acronym for the original English name “As Long As Possible”). The Finnish Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art has acquired GIF exhibition rights and is responsible for any inconvenience for the next millennium.

It turns out that it is possible that the computer displaying the image may simply stop working or the power will run out. Ingen was aware of this and created a time capsule in which the GIF is stored under lock and key if it needs to be run again. Already the museum is displaying several copies of ASLAP, trying to ensure that at least one of them completes the mission in the future. Will it work?
