The dump that became the largest beach recovery project in history

Uncommon with tourists and with a seaside slum, Versova Beach in Mumbai, India has never attracted much attention from local authorities. As its rare patrons lost, its strip of sand was being filled with piles and piles of rubbish. This sad reality, however, began to gain a different outcome from 2015, and none of this would have happened if it weren't for a guy named Afroz Shah.

He had recently moved to one of the many housing developments around Versova, and from the window of his apartment, the sea that drew his attention was not the Arabian, but the solid waste heaped on the shore. "Anyone could drown in plastic, " Shah told CNN.

With the help of a neighbor, the lawyer put on gloves and began to remove the accumulated trash that lined the long beach. Gradually, this particular initiative was gaining the adhesion of more and more volunteers, to the point of being internationally recognized for the dimension that came to acquire. In a matter of weeks, more than 1, 000 people joined them - including locals, environmental activists, politicians, Bollywood celebrities and anonymous people.

For 21 months, the group removed 5.3 million kilograms of waste in approximately 2.5 kilometers of sand strip. In addition to radically changing the resort's landscape, the mobilization has been classified by the United Nations as the largest coastal recovery project ever undertaken in the world. The most incredible thing, however, was yet to happen.

In March of this year, Shah learned from a volunteer who participated in the cleaning operation that olive turtles were leaving their nests and heading for the sea. At the time, he gathered 25 more people to protect the newest nursery on the Indian coast and ensure that the 80 or so offspring of this species, typical of the tropical seas, did not take another course or were attacked by lurking animals.

While nature is resuming its usual course on the shores of Mumbai, Shah confesses that he still has one wish: to plant coconut trees on the shore, as in the old days.
