Can physical exercise hurt?

One article, published by The New York Times, suggests that for some people, physical activity may actually be harmful to their health. A study by a group of researchers found that for some of us, contrary to what most people think, exercising can be harmful.

Scientists evaluated how 1, 687 subjects responded to rigorous exercise, finding that 10% experienced worsening in one or more conditions related to heart problems, such as insulin levels, HDL cholesterol and blood pressure. In contrast, of the remaining 90% of participants, the same proportion - that is, another 10% - showed significant improvements over the same rates.

Bizarre Results

The most curious thing, however, is that researchers cannot tell what is causing this worsening by simply admitting that the discovery is totally bizarre. In addition, the team fears that the results may serve as a pretext for lazy people - those looking for any excuse not to move - to abandon their exercise routines.

While most studies of the effects of physical activity on the body say they are beneficial, little research is done to assess whether people actually suffer from less health or live longer.

But the researchers seem to agree with one point that has been made clear with this new study: something that is considered very good for most may not be so beneficial for a small minority.
