The Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science has announced the 2018 Oscar nominees, with a selection of the industry's best work in the past year.

The Water Form received the highest number of nominations, competing in 13 categories and setting itself up as the big favorite of this awards season. The feature was just one nomination behind Oscar record holders - The Malvada (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016), who had 14 nominations.

Behind The Form of Water are the films: Dunkirk, with 8 nominations, and Three Announcements for a Crime, with 7. Also competing for the Academy's top award are the feature films Call Me By Your Name, The Fate of a Nation, Run!, Phantom Plot, The Post: The Secret War and Lady Bird: The Time to Fly .

The curiosities of this list of nominations include: Greta Gerwig, who became the fifth woman to be nominated for direction; Jordan Peele as the third person to be recognized for the direction of his first feature film; and Rachel Morrison, who goes down in history as the first woman to be nominated in the photography category!

In the acting categories, eight actors are new to the Oscars: Timothée Chalamet, Daniel Kaluuya, Sam Rockwell, Margot Robbie, Mary J. Blige, Allison Janney, Lesley Manville and Laurie Metcalf. Six others have taken the figurine before: Daniel Day-Lewis, Denzel Washington, Christopher Plummer, Frances McDormand, Meryl Streep and Octavia Spencer.

It is also worth noting that Meryl Streep raised his own record, earning his 21st nomination. Already Christopher Plummer became the oldest actor to win an appointment at the age of 88.

The awards ceremony will be held on March 4, featuring Jimmy Kimmel.
