Pablo Picasso also painted with light [gallery]

The image above is part of a series of photographs of Pablo Picasso taken in 1949 by Gjon Mili, who at the time worked as a photographer for LIFE magazine. The incredible portraits show the famous Spanish artist painting with light.

The photos were taken with two simultaneous cameras, recording how Picasso, who was then 67, played with a small light bulb in a dark environment. The images created by the Spanish show centaurs, Greek profiles, flower pots and - of course - bulls, as well as being a curious record of the artist's "brilliant" creative process.

The portraits were taken over five different sessions, and many of the photos you can check out in the gallery below were never published by LIFE magazine.
