Patient farts during surgery and causes hospital fire

An unidentified patient, who was undergoing surgery at Tokyo University Hospital in Japan, eventually caused a fire in the operating room by farting. She was undergoing a cervical procedure using a laser and would have suffered numerous burns during the incident.

Fire increased after hitting operating room insulation curtains

The unforeseen event took place in April this year, but was only released recently after investigations into the case were completed. In a report, the hospital states that the fire was not caused by a failure in the equipment used in the surgery, but as a result of the flammable materials released by the patient during the procedure.

According to the document, the gases emitted by the woman caused the flames to come into contact with laser irradiation, and the fire would have taken great proportions when reaching the insulation curtains of the surgical environment.
