Pepsi suspends suspiciously carcinogenic component used in drinks

According to studies from the United States Toxicology Program, certain types of soft drinks may contain substances that stimulate the development of cancer in people. In experiments with mice fed the 4-MEI component, animals created lung cancer cells much more easily than other mice, which were not exposed to the chemical component.

A report by the Oakland Health Center found that PepsiCo sodas have a small amount of 4-MEI. So in the state of California, the formulas were completely changed - yet in other states of the country they remained identical. California law requires beverages that have carcinogenic components to have specific labels, informing consumers of their compositions.

After a year that the state labeled 4-MEI as a carcinogen, PepsiCo's president said it would be suspended at all of its plants. The company said its suppliers are working to reduce substance use, greatly reducing the degree of 4-MEI found in soft drinks.

Uncertain controversy

In a public statement, company members said they refute the idea that their products are unsafe, as this is one of PepsiCo's priorities. They said that the requirements would be met within the time limit set by law and that 4-MEI quantities would be greatly reduced at all locations.

On the other hand, a representative of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that more studies need to be done with the component, as there are no cases or signs that it really is a risk to the population. The spokesman said that, based on the information, there is no reason to believe in short or medium term dangers due to 4-MEI.
