World Meatless Week: Know the Benefits of Vegetarianism in 7 Days

From June 17 to 23 is World Meatless Week. The campaign, conducted in partnership by Mercy for Animals (MFA), Greenpeace and the Brazilian Vegetarian Society (SVB), aims to raise awareness about the consequences of meat consumption. The idea is that with small changes people will know the practicalities of removing meat from food and understand a little more about vegetarianism.

On the campaign website you can check some information on the main reasons to avoid meat consumption. Data on environmental and health impacts are presented, as well as information on how the meat industry works and animal life violence. You can still sign up to receive daily emails with tips to help you meet the challenge.

By not consuming meat for a day, for example, it prevents 14kg of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere, 24m² of land from being spared, 7kg of grain from being consumed and 3, 400 liters of water from being spared. The goal of World Meatless Week is to make people also reflect on this data and realize the importance that dietary change can have.

These impacts are some of the reasons why some experts believe that in up to two decades, 60% of the "meat" consumed is not of animal origin. The Mercy For Animals NGO also points out that the challenge can be a fresh start, as well as being an opportunity for anyone interested in learning about the benefits of adopting a vegan diet - and if you are not sure what that means, here is a All About Veganism article.

The official website also features simple recipes for people to make at home during the week, as well as a campaign schedule that will feature daily lives to address issues such as local meatless options, environmental and health impacts.
