Texan known as “Half Tongue Killer” lost over 360 kg

In 2008, Texas Mayra Rosales made headlines in the US newspapers after she was accused of killing her two-year-old nephew by rolling over the child. At the time, she weighed 469 kg and so earned the nickname "Half Tongue Killer".

If convicted, she would risk the death penalty. During the trial, however, it was proved by the defense that her weight was so large that she was physically unable to move on her own, let alone crush a child.

She lied to protect her sister, Jaime Lee Rosales, the boy's mother and true killer, who killed him with a blow to the head. The Texan did not want her other three nephews to be helpless, so she was willing to sacrifice herself for her sister's benefit. After being able to get Jaime to confess the crime, Mayra was acquitted and the real culprit was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

A new life

After being cleared, Mayra decided to radically change her life. With the help of vascular and bariatric surgeon Dr. Younan Nowzaraden, she has so far undergone 11 surgeries and a strict diet to lose all her excess weight.

Today, after losing 362 kg, the woman weighs only 107 kg, with the intention of still losing another 13 kg, and incredibly has no more serious health problems, even suffering from morbid obesity for so many years.

“I believe it is a miracle of God that I am healthy. I am alive, and I am not diabetic. I have no cholesterol issues. I don't have high blood pressure, so I'm healthy, ”Rosales told ABC's Nightline.

Inspiration for others

Mayra's life-changing and life-changing story was transformed in 2013 into a documentary on the TLC channel called “Half-Ton Killer: Transformed”. The goal was to inspire others to change their habits and pursue a healthier lifestyle.

“I used to occupy a king size bed alone. I couldn't even stand up because my legs were unable to support my weight, ”she said at one point in the program. "I used to live only to eat, and now this is just a normal thing, you know."

Mayra and her husband are trying to secure custody of Jaime's three children, who now live with their grandmother, a lady who is too old to care for the children alone.
