Toronto records the biggest rainfall in the last 60 years

Here in Brazil we are already used to heavy rains that - unfortunately - cause flooding and even leave hundreds of homeless every year. A case that has been widely reported recently was the record flow at Iguazu Falls, which forced the National Park administration to close its doors for safety reasons.

But it's not just here that heavy storms have caused havoc. After recording record rainfall this Monday, July 8, Toronto, Canada, went underwater. According to the authorities, a volume equivalent to 10 centimeters of water reached the city and its surroundings in just two hours, and at the airport was registered a volume of almost 13 centimeters.

Chaos

This amount of rain is more than the average normally expected for the whole of July, and the floods were caused by two storms that struck the Toronto area. The situation has gotten so bad that between 5 and 16, 000 people are still without electricity, and the efficient transportation system has “drowned”.

Bus and train traffic has been disrupted in various parts of the city and, due to the rapid increase in flooding, many drivers have been caught by surprise on the streets and highways, becoming islanded or having to abandon their vehicles.
