Trump will create a Space Force to ensure US supremacy

US President Donald Trump said today he would create a new military department to "secure US domination in space." In this way, the US military would be left with six departments, now comprised of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

Trump: We will have the Air Force and we will have the 'Space Force'. Separate but equal

"It's not just about having a US presence in space. We need to have US dominance in space, " Donald Trump said during a meeting with the National Space Council. "We will have the Air Force and we will have the 'Space Force'. Separate but equal, " he added.

As Reuters recalled, the United States is part of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. This means that Trump country does not position weapons of mass destruction in space - and that celestial bodies (the Moon, for example) can only be used for peaceful purposes.

  • Trump jokes, but later says serious about “Space Military Force”

"Space is a war domain, so it is vital that our Armed Forces maintain their domain and competitive advantage in that domain, " said a US official who spoke on condition of anonymity to Reuters.

Bill Nelson: Fortunately, the president can't do that without Congress

This is not the first time Donald Trump has spoken about developing a Space Force for the US. Last time this happened in 2017, Air Force military commented that this would be "a move in the wrong direction."

Now the US Congress will have to approve the creation of the department. According to Democratic Senator Bill Nelson, "Fortunately, the president cannot do this without Congress, because now is not the time to split the Air Force. Many missions are at stake."
