Heroin addiction vaccine may be close to reality

Nowadays, the fight against drug use is mainly done through awareness campaigns. This can be greatly enhanced in the future if medicines are developed to prevent addiction. Scientists at the US Scripps Research Institute have recently developed a vaccine that can counteract the hallucinogenic effects of heroin.

This is the first medication of its kind and is supposed to end the addiction within 8 months of vaccine administration. In tests on Rhesus monkeys, the drug served as a kind of teacher for immune cells, which began to make antibodies that could counteract the effects of heroin before it could cause its effects, such as hallucinations and euphoria.

Heroin can be administered in different ways, causing euphoria and agitation.

The next step is the release for this vaccine to be tested in humans. If so, it will be the first opioid vaccine ever tested in the world. With the lack of pleasure in the substance use, the drug addict tends to leave the drug aside, also not suffering from its side effects.

In addition, this vaccine may open the door for further studies of this kind to be developed so that more drugs can be neutralized in the human body before causing their effects on the brain. The way will be to hope to work!
