See when a hearing impaired first hears

Many people in the world are hearing impaired, some of whom have lost their ability to hear over the course of their lives and others have been born with this problem. A woman who fit this second case is thrilling the virtual community with a video released about her first few minutes of listening to sounds for the first time.

Joanne Milne, 40, suffers from a rare condition called Usher Syndrome and from birth she was completely deaf. Never before had she had the ability to hear any sound and her life was surrounded by silence.

But last month, all that changed and Joanne underwent surgery to place bilateral cochlear implants to restore hearing.

Unique emotion

Usher syndrome is a genetic or hereditary condition that affects a person's hearing, vision and balance. A person diagnosed with Usher Syndrome usually suffers hearing loss from birth and may or may not be affected by vision loss.
