Vitamin B3 May Prevent Miscarriage And Fetal Malformation

A 12-year study by the Sydney Institute of Cardiology in Australia evaluated the effects of vitamin B3 use during the gestation of several women. The results revealed that this supplement reduces the risks of fetal malformation and miscarriages.

According to study leader Sally Dunwoodie, the use of vitamin B3 has the power to significantly reduce both cases of miscarriage and fetal malformation.

The research looked at genetic aspects of families who had miscarriages or had malformed children. The analysis revealed that these people have a genetic mutation that affected the production of a molecule called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), a key enzyme for energy production, DNA repair and cellular communication.

In mice, scientists removed the two genes related to this problem to find out if it would cause malformation. Initially, no changes were observed, and NAD was still produced by the mice - then scientists realized that this was due to the vitamin B3-rich diet of mice.

By removing this vitamin from the diet of animals, many died before they were born, and of those who were born, a good part had malformation.

This study was a test and the results still need to be applied to humans before doctors begin recommending vitamin B3 supplementation to pregnant women. Still, the results achieved are very promising and give us high hopes for antenatal treatments.
