Do you know how often to change sheets?

Tired of sleeping alone without a big guy to call your own? Your problems are over. Just leave your bedding for over a week, and voila! You'll practically have a sleepover with the company of thousands of dust mites, bacteria and fungi, according to New York University microbiologist Philip Tierno. Of course, this scenario is not at all positive, in fact, and it can bring diseases and skin problems.

The solution, according to the expert, is to change pillowcases and sheets once a week - but beware - if you wear pajamas! If this is not the case, it may increase the frequency of washing the bedding. The reason is in the exchange of cells and the sweat our body produces.

Human beings spend at least a third of their life in bed and produce about 98.5 liters of sweat a year, and if the weather is humid and hot, the perfect environment for the spread of dust mites and bacteria is created. We can also add to this party other body excretions, pollen, dust, pollution and more substances that touch us on a daily basis. All of this accumulated in a place that should be clean and comfortable - not a gathering of microorganisms.

All these substances accumulate during the week in your bed and can cause everything from allergies, itching and skin irritation to illness. “Even if you are not allergic, you can develop an allergic response to exposure to microbes and other substances, ” says Tierno. The situation gets worse if the owner of the bed has a bruise or skin irritation as the site can easily be contaminated.

In addition to bedding, it is also important to wash pillows, blankets and comforters frequently, preferably in hot water. Considering buying new pillows every 2 years and changing the mattress every 5 years will also help your health and sleep quality.
