Do you know what these two shiny balls are in the picture?

Could you identify the two brightest balls that are most visible from the image above? There are other little dots there, very small, but the two biggest and most obvious are our planet and the moon, our faithful companion! According to Jacinta Bowler of Science Alert, the pair was registered by the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft while the spacecraft was nearly 64 million kilometers away.

According to Jacinta, the spacecraft was launched into space in 2016, and its mission is to study and collect samples of asteroid 101955 Bennu and bring the fragments back to Earth. NASA estimates the equipment is expected to reach space rock in August this year - and if all goes as expected, its return is expected by September 2023. See full image below:

Earth, moon and several stars

There are a lot of things in this picture! (Science Alert / NASA / Goddard / University of Arizona / Lockheed Martin)

* You can find and explore a high resolution version via this link.

The image you just saw was recorded as OSIRIS-REx travels 8.5 kilometers per second toward the asteroid, and according to NASA people, it shows many more celestial bodies than Earth and its satellite.

Not that people here at Mega can identify much besides bright dots, but according to the space agency, the mole spot in the upper left is the Pleiades in the Taurus Constellation, while the bright spot in the Top right of the photo is the brightest star of the Aries constellation, Hamal.

The Earth and the Moon we already know who they are in the image and, according to NASA, around them are five stars - which make up the "head" of the constellation Cetus, the Whale. Who would say there could be so much visible in the picture!
