10 actors who had accidents on the big screen

Not everything is glamor in Hollywood. In some striking scenes from the movies, several actors have given much more than a brilliant performance on the theatrical release. The injuries range from small bruises to broken bones, and you may not even imagine that your favorite star's scene was fueled by the adrenaline rush of real pain.

Of course, accidents do happen, but it is not so common for some scenes with actual cuts and fractures to reach the version that is shown to the public. Listed below are some movies where character pain is not pure fiction.

Fred Astaire - In the Waters of the Squadron (1936)

Injury: Chin and eye hit

Reason: During one of the choreography of the musical, Ginger Rogers, Astaire's partner on the scene, wore a long-sleeved dress decorated with beads, and it was precisely that part of the costume that struck Astaire's face as Rogers whirled around.

The weight of the beads along with the speed of the spin and the fact that it was hit in the eye made the actor half dizzy. They tried to rewrite the scene a few more times, but there was no way, the best was exactly the one that Astaire was hit in the face.

Margaret Hamilton - The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Injury: Second degree burns to face and hand

Reason: The actress played the Wicked Witch of the West and was eventually burned in a scene involving pyrotechnic effects for the character to disappear. A trapdoor that was supposed to protect the actress from the blast didn't work well and she really got injured.

Six weeks later, when she filmed again, she had to wear heavy makeup and green gloves on her hands to hide the burns.

Malcolm McDowell - Mechanical Orange (1971)

Injury: Corneal scratch and temporary blindness

Why: The character's brainwashing scene is perhaps one of the most iconic in Stanley Kubrick's classic movie. What you may not know is that it was precisely this scene that made McDowell nearly blind for the long time he had his eyes forced open.

In fact, the doctor in the scene who drips a drug into the actor's eyes was a real doctor who needed to apply eye drops every 15 seconds to prevent Malcolm McDowell from becoming permanently blind.

Brad Pitt - Seven: The Seven Capital Crimes (1995)

Injury: Rupture of a tendon in the hand

Reason: During a rain chase scene, Brad Pitt ends up sticking his arm through a window and thereby breaking a tendon in his hand. To avoid stopping the recordings, the injury was incorporated into the film script, and the actor was able to continue filming with his bandaged arm.

Nicole Kidman - Moulin Rouge: Love in Red (2002)

Injury: Broken ribs and a tear in the knee cartilage

Reason: During one of the rehearsals, two weeks before shooting began, Nicole Kidman's partner in the movie, Ewan MacGregor, dropped the star, causing her to break her ribs and rupture her knee cartilage.

When the actual shooting began, the actress was almost recovered, but the costume required very tight corsets, and this eventually caused the ribs to break again. In addition, the knee was not yet fully recovered, and many of the scenes had to be done with the actress sitting because she was wearing a leg brace.

Viggo Mortensen - Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

Injury: Two broken toes and one chipped tooth

Reason: In one scene, Aragorn kicks a helmet, screams to show his frustration, and falls to his knees. What a lot of people don't know is that the moment he kicked his helmet, he broke two toes, and the scream was in part the character's frustration mixed with the actor's own pain.

In another totally different scene, in the middle of a battle, the star took a blow to the mouth that tore off a piece of the tooth, but only asked for some glue and continued the recording.

A curious fact is that other actors also suffered injuries while filming the trilogy. Orlando Bloom (Legolas) broke his ribs, and Sean Astin (Sam) cut his foot and needed to get points. What a zica!

Halle Berry - In the Company of Fear (2003)

Injury: Broken Arm

Reason: In one of the scenes, Robert Downey Jr holds Halle Berry while she struggles, but the two actors got excited: Downey Jr did a little more force than he should and broke Berry's arm.

Filming had to be paused for eight weeks as Berry recovered, and she said it was just a bizarre accident, and the two are still friends.

Leonardo DiCaprio - Free Django (2012)

Injury: Cuts in the Hand

Reason: During a scene where the actor was screaming fiercely at other characters, DiCaprio hit the table so hard that he smashed a glass and cut his hand. However, despite the dripping blood, he continued to interpret, and it is even possible to see him taking the shards of glass from the cut in a few moments.

After scaring a few of the fellow onstage and even smearing another actor's face with very real blood, DiCaprio needed to get some stitches, but continued filming normally.

Jake Gyllenhall - The Vulture (2014)

Injury: Cuts in the Hand

Reason: The scene in which Gyllenhaal holds a mirror and screams to show her frustration was so intense that the mirror broke and eventually cut the actor's hand badly. After that, Jake took a few stitches and tried to hide it by leaving his hand behind his back in some scenes.

Channing Tatum - Foxcatcher: A Story That Shocked The World (2015)

Injury: Cuts and bruises on face and head

Reason: In one of the scenes, Tatum's character is so angry that he begins to destroy the hotel room and headbutt in a mirror. Despite the protection, the actor managed not only to break the mirror, but also part of the drywall wall, and cut his own face.

The movie only premiered here in Brazil at the beginning of 2015, but if you watch it, take a good look at this scene and know that the actor literally gave his own blood for it.
