12 mind-blowing photos of science experiments

Over the years, artist Caleb Charland has been mixing science and photography in his work, creating images that challenge our perception. After experimenting with fruits in which he produced electricity with oranges and apples, Charland returned to where he began his career: surreal long exposure photography.

If you don't know, long exposure photography consists of capturing images through a camera with the shutter - one of the main components of a camera - open for more than a second.

Surreal Photographs

His most recent work is a collection of materials and methods, each with very particular characteristics. In the first photograph, for example, he shows what happens when sparking material — such as those used at St. John's parties — is attached to a metronome.

“As the spark-producing stick burns, it gets shorter and when combined with the left-right movement of a metronome a zigzag is drawn on the film during a long exposure, ” explains the artist.

The titles of each image give you an idea of what action they represent, but the whole story is up to your imagination. The project is an interesting twist on scientific experimentation, an area commonly known for its accuracy, objectivity and little room for abstraction.

Charland's photos end up running away from this strictly rational equation and cause various sensations in which he sees, playing with concepts of physics and chemistry. The result, you can check below:
