Indian lawyer wants to sue WhatsApp over emoji

An Indian lawyer is threatening to sue one of the largest technology companies in the world over an emoji. Yeah, you read that exactly! Lawyer Gurmeet Singh is very unhappy about the emojis that can be used on WhatsApp, and the "middle finger" seems to have been the last straw.

According to Indian News 18, Singh says he will wait 15 days for the communicator to remove the emoji from the app in India. If this does not happen, the action will be filed and the parties will have to settle in the courts. He states: "By offering the middle finger emoji in the app, WhatsApp is being a direct accomplice in the use of obscene and offensive gestures."

But if you think he has no chance of winning, you can change that. In a statement to the Indian press, Singh cites excerpts from the Indian penal code, including excerpts claiming the illegality of showing offensive or obscene gestures to women. And he goes even further, citing that the middle finger is "a serious offense in Ireland".

To date, WhatsApp has not issued any statement on the matter.
