Beautiful and sustainable: Bike path in the Netherlands shines in the dark [video]

If there is a place that gathers an absurd amount of cyclists in the world, this is the Netherlands, of course. There, the use of bicycles is taken so seriously that the guys did not skimp on creativity when inventing an ideal bike path for those who ride at night.

Inspired by Dutch-born artist Van Gogh, the studio Roosegaarde crowd, in partnership with Heijmans, created a bright and simply inspiring bike lane.

The bike path is the second work of a project called “Smart Highway”, which seeks a happy meeting between art, technology and sustainability. The idea is to develop other projects of this style soon. The Van Gogh-Roosegaarde bike path was inspired by one of the artist's best-known works, Starry Night.

The idea was to give more prominence to the local artist, whose 125th anniversary of death is completed in 2015, and illuminate the life of those who ride bikes at night. To create the bike path, thousands of luminescent stones that are recharged with solar energy and glow in the dark were used. In other words, besides helping to create an extremely poetic bike path, there is no electricity involved in the project. Watch the video above and then tell us what you think of this idea.
