Bees are considered the most important beings on earth.

The last meeting of the Royal Geographical Society of London, one of the most respected institutions that studies and supports the study and research of geography in the world, was the scene of two striking revelations, one good and one terrible.

The good news, presented by representatives of the Earthwatch Institute, was that bees are arguably the most important living things on planet Earth. Paradoxically, according to wildlife biologists and scientists, this important animal species has just joined the endangered ones.

Recent studies reveal a worrying decline in the bee population in recent years. Almost 90% of these insects are estimated to have been eliminated and the main reasons for extermination are the indiscriminate use of pesticides, deforestation and the reduction of flower numbers.

The importance of bees

After all, why is such a small insect, living just over a month, recognized as the most important creature on earth? The answer is not sophisticated, nor does it demand more than a basic knowledge of science. About 70% of world agriculture depends exclusively on bees.

Anyone who has ever sat on a school bench knows that pollination is the daily, incessant work of bees. As plants cannot reproduce on their own, it is concluded that the flora, and consequently also the planetary fauna, would soon become extinct without the help of these laborers.

In addition, there is another important revelation about our honey makers: research conducted by the Mayor University's Center for Beekeeping Studies of Chile, with the support of the FundaciĆ³n para la InnovaciĆ³n Agraria (FIA), concluded that bees are the only living beings that do carry no pathogens in the body, that is, they are beings without risk of producing any kind of infectious contamination.

Saving the bees is fundamental for the planet

Now, if bees have been declared, and indeed are, the most important animal species for the planetary ecosystem, and if they were considered as an endangered species, we have to regard this as a priority agenda in discussions about the environment.

We need to act immediately while we can still deploy some kind of solution.
