Contradiction: Mexican Stuffed Palettes Don't Exist in Mexico

The new gastronomic fad that has spread throughout Brazil are the palettes: popsicles of Mexican origin usually made of fruits or chocolate and stuffed with other ingredients.

They are sold in kiosks in shopping malls or in stores around the cities. But did you happen to know that in Mexico the palettes are very different from the ones we have here?

For starters, they are made only with fruits or other simple ingredients and water, without any cream, filling or combination. One of the most consumed flavors there is hibiscus flower, for example. Strawberry with condensed milk filling? No way.

No kiosks, carts

There are no store franchises or kiosks that sell palettes like some gourmet dessert. Paleteros sell the delicacy in trolleys pushed through the streets, similar to the ice cream makers we see on the beaches during the summer. And the prices are so popular that it is common to see palettes being sold to children at school doors.

The most traditional brand in Mexico is called La Michoacana Paleteria y Neveria, which has always been sold in carts, and only recently opened its first store. But it is a simple shop, none of the air-conditioned and colorfully designed spaces that have been spreading throughout Brazil.

Mexican Hugo Delgado, a restaurant owner who has lived here for 15 years, said in an interview with Estadão PME portal that the palette fever in our country was a stroke of luck., because it does not have the foreignness that the Brazilian loves ”.

Popular (nothing) prices

Chef Maria Paulina Etchegaray, also born in Mexico, has lived in Brazil for a long time, but says she has never forgotten the palettes she tasted there as a child. She recalls that the size is the same as those sold here, and her favorite flavor is rice pudding, or "con leche rice".

She met the Brazilian version of the frozen delicacy when she had a disagreement with her husband, who to calm the chef's moods, went out and bought 10 palettes to give her. “I was interested and asked how much he had spent. When he said R $ 100, I found the price quite absurd, ”she told Estadão.
