These illustrations about modern life are a real slap in the face

Rafael Alvarez is a Spanish illustrator who works recording everyday scenes in a provocative, dark and painful way. Concerned with showing angles that we don't always see, but which we know are there, Alvarez manages to draw the attention of even the most distracted of people, and makes us look at what we don't always want to see.

The artist himself explains that it is difficult to create his works and that he knows how complicated it is to see the dark side of human attitudes, but that he chooses to do so through his illustrations precisely because of the need to differentiate between sensationalism of things and truth. Otherwise, he says, we risk losing our critical thinking and the ability to care about the world.
