According to Discovery News, a study published by the American Journal of Psychiatry suggests that old age, while usually accompanied by progressive physical and mental decline, can also be a much more positive process than previously thought.

Apparently 'aging' seems to be more related to the stereotypes that younger people create about the elderly - associating old age with health problems, melancholy and dementia - than with the actual way older people view seniors.

So, to understand what older people think of old age, the researchers relied on data from a random group of 1, 000 Americans aged 50-99. In a first phase, questions related to general health, mental functions and depression were assessed during a telephone conversation. In the second phase, participants answered a questionnaire about their perceptions of old age.

More mature and happy

Scientists have found that, as expected, older people actually suffer from more physical health problems than younger ones. On the other hand, when participants were asked to rate their aging with grades on a scale from 0 to 10, the researchers found that the highest score was also proportional to older ages.

The study also pointed out that the elderly worry less about some issues that usually stress the younger ones. In addition, while most people fear reaching old age, older people are happy to remain alive and aware and proud of everything they have done and achieved in their lives.

What's more, humans have the incredible ability to adapt to circumstances, and this trait can be clearly seen in the elderly, who must resiliently adapt to the progressive physical and mental decline.
