Woman used potato as a contraceptive and roots were born inside her body

Yes, there are several rather suspicious folk customs that mothers pass on to their children, but sometimes they really should be abolished altogether. This is the case of a 22-year-old Colombian woman who accepted her mother's advice to use potatoes (yes, that's right) as a contraceptive mode. The young woman has put the vegetable into her vagina because, according to her mother (and who knows where she got it from), this is an effective method not to get pregnant.

The result? The young woman was admitted to a local hospital with severe stomach pain. When doctors performed tests, they found that a potato was inside the woman's body and was apparently germinating and taking root in her body. This bizarre story was told by the Colombia Reports website, one of the country's largest information portals.

When questioned by the doctors, she said, "My mother said that if I didn't want to get pregnant, I should put a potato down there, and I believed it." The nurse who analyzed the girl's body first said it was clear that roots were growing inside the girl. It is likely that the humid and warm environment has favored such growth.

The important thing is that doctors confirmed that major damage did not occur to the girl's body. The hospital staff rebuked the mother's advice, which only reveals how certain communities lack a minimum of sex education. Maria Eugenia Rosselli, a sociologist at the Colombian Ministry of Education, said the lack of enlightened conversations about sex between parents and children meant that there was an empty space for information.
