To slow vehicle speed, city creates 3D crosswalk

Ísafjörð is a small, friendly town in Iceland that is gaining worldwide attention because of an intelligent traffic safety measure. At a pedestrian crossing, a lane has been painted in 3D to make rushed drivers have no choice but to slow down cars.

The painting creates an illusion of perfect optics that also makes pedestrians themselves enjoy themselves as they pass the seemingly floating lane.

Good idea

The idea behind the painting was environmentalist Ralf Trylla, who saw a similar project in New Delhi, India, and decided to propose it to his city.

The company Vegmálun Gíh, responsible for the three-dimensional strip, has been able to do a truly admirable job. After viewing the photos of this unusual crosswalk, tell us what you think and if you think it would work where you live.
