Reaction to red hair pain is different from other people

Do you know any redheads who are extremely cold? One study indicates that this is not just a case of "freshness" but the fault of her own genes. The research, published on ScienceNordic, has so far revealed that they have the following differences compared to a “normal” person:

  • Increased sensitivity to cold;
  • Lower response to subcutaneous anesthetics;
  • They suffer more from toothaches and are therefore more afraid of dentists;
  • They are at higher risk of developing sclerosis and endometriosis.

But perhaps the most outstanding feature is the time to resist the sensation of pain. At this point, redheads stand up to levels far above other people, according to Lars Arendt-Nielsen, professor at Aalborg University's Sensor-Motor Interaction Center.

To test this, the researchers injected a quantity of pain-causing capsaicin found in peppers into the skin of candidates. The results showed that the redheads reacted less to pressures or stings in the area, indicating that they have a slightly better than normal natural protection.

According to Arendt-Nielsen, the answer lies in the MC1R receptor gene, in addition to the MC2R, MC3R and MC4R subgroups, which are directly linked to central brain functions and linked to redheads. "This may be the key to explaining why redheads are a little different from other people, " he said.
