Do you know why ocean waves foam?

You probably have noticed, if not personally, in a movie or photograph that the seawater sometimes reaches the beach sand with a prominent foam, right? But do you know what causes this bizarre foam to appear?

The Mother Nature Network guys published an article explaining how this phenomenon happens and, in the end, the justification is quite simple. First, keep in mind that seawater is made up of salt particles, protein, fat, dead algae and a plethora of other organic materials.

If you put some seawater in a glass and shake the liquid well, you would notice a little foam. With the sea in constant motion is the same thing, only in much larger proportions.

Organic material

What you need to know is that sea foam is basically caused when there is large wave movement, usually produced by high winds.

Most of the time, we don't have to worry about finding foam on the shore, since it's made of organic material. The problem is that sometimes this foam brings with it some giveaways that you would certainly not like to put in contact with your skin.

Since you can't walk around with a mobile lab to check whether or not the foam is disgusting, be smart: when the foam is near some area that leads to polluted water to the beach, don't wet your feet. In addition, if it is a region with high algal blooms, it is best to stay away and not risk developing any allergic irritation - even worse for those who have a breathing problem such as asthma.

Good sign

According to Jennifer Skene, in a statement published in the MNN, the formation of this foam is particularly important to remember that the ocean is full of organic substances that play a key role throughout the planet.

Jennifer also explained that these organic materials represent the largest carbon reserve in the world, as well as ensuring the balance of the planet's maritime chain. So the next time you see the foam in the waters that wet your feet on the beach, remember the key role it plays in balancing the planet. Now, if you have a sewer or a lot of water nearby, run into the hills.
