15 images that illustrate some events that marked 2013
2013 is coming to an end and, as usual, lists of extraordinary events, illustrious characters and iconic images have begun to circulate. The folks at BuzzFeed have published a story with a huge list of the most impactful photos of the year, and we at Mega Curioso have selected 15 of them for you to check out. 1 - Tightrope
The image above ran the world, and shows the North American tightrope walker Nik Vallenda crossing a canyon in the Grand Canyon without any safety gear. The distance covered was just over 425 meters and took almost 23 minutes, and the wire rope - only 5 centimeters in diameter - was over 450 meters high.
2 - Anonymous Hero
A simple gesture to brighten the day of a hospitalized child: a worker dressed as Superman plays with a boarding school boy at the Sabará Children's Hospital in São Paulo.
3 - Refuge
Australian children supported by their grandmother take shelter in the water to escape a terrible fire that hit the village of Dunalley, located on the east coast of Tasmania.
4 - Flowers
The photo above was taken during a demonstration in Bangkok against the Thai government, and records the moment when a Protestant delivers a rose to a soldier.
5 - Tears
Clicked on Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, the portrait shows Thania Sayne crying at the headstone of her husband, an American soldier who was killed in Afghanistan in 2011.
6 - Religion and technology
Who hasn't seen - and was surprised by - the photo above, which shows thousands of believers portraying the newly elected Pope Francis?
7 - By a thread
The click above was captured moments before the Indian boy hanging from a power cord - to escape a huge flood - fell into the waters of the Ganges River.
8 - Sinister Catch
Another image that went around the world a lot in 2013 was the moment a boy jumps off the bridge over the Yangtze River in Wuhan, China, minutes after someone else committed suicide at the same location.
9 - Learning early
Photographed in October at the beginning of the Eid - the Muslim festival that takes place before the pilgrimage to Mecca - the Afghan boys play with toy guns.
10 - Flames
The image above shows the exact moment when a gas pump that a Bahraini protester was preparing to launch is hit by a shock troop fire.
11 - Marathon Runner
Another photograph that went around the world this year was that of Bill Iffrig, the 78-year-old who fell near the finish line during the Boston Marathon blasts.
12 - Faithful Companion
The thrilling image above shows Figo, a police dog from Kentucky, saying goodbye to his partner Jason Ellis, killed on duty.
13 - Survivors
Another striking image, this time showing survivors of Super Typhoon Halyan - who hit the Philippines and left almost 2 million people homeless - during a procession.
14 - Mini Batman
Who hasn't seen and been moved by the story of the little American boy whose biggest wish was to be a superhero for a day? For a whole day San Francisco turned into Gotham City and Miles - the little boy - fought the crime dressed as Batman.
15 - Cloud
The gigantic cloud above, despite appearing to be dust particles, emerged during the opening of the floodgates of the Xiaolangdi Dam on the Yellow River in China.
